Childhood
Muhammad Ali was born in Louisville, Kentucky on January 17th, 1942. In his early days, Ali was open to many kinds of racism living in the segregated south. This probably helped him start his boxing career. Muhammad Ali was born to his father, Cassius Marcellus Clay Sr. who was a billboard and sign painter, and his mother Odessa Grady Clay who was a stay-at-home mom. He also had a younger brother. When Ali was young at age 12, his bike was stolen. After telling the police that he wished he could just beat up the thief, the officer told him "Well, you better learn how to fight before you start challenging people." Muhammad took these words to heart and began training at a local gym.
Education
Ali went to high school at Louisville Central High in Kentucky. His school was an all black school until 1956 when it was desegregated. Ali never attended college.
Career
Muhammad Ali wins a gold medal in the summer Olympics. Later after his return, he is refused service at a restaurant by a white waitress and has to fight a white gang and is so disgusted, he throws his gold medal into the Ohio River. On Feb. 25th 1964, Ali challenged Sonny Liston, who was at the time considered the best boxer around, for the heavyweight championship of the world. After a stunning 6 rounds, Ali won and was then crowned the championship boxer of the world. In April of 1967 Ali refuses induction to the U.S. Army. he states "I ain't got no quarrel with those Vietcong." Muhammad is fined $10,000 and is sent to jail for five years. On June 27th, 1979, Muhammad retires from his amazing boxing career. Ali returns from retirement in 1980, and fights the new heavyweight champ, Larry Holmes. Ali takes an estimated 125 punches in the fight. The thing was, Ali was sick with Parkinson's Disease. Ali and all of his fans knew this when Ali went into the fight, but Ali still had the nerve to proceed with the fight. Muhammad Ali finally retires for real in 1981.
